The world of used hi-fi stereo equipment is one which is best approached with a certain amount of caution. While there is undoubtedly a great deal of first class equipment available to buy at second hand, there is also absolutely no shortage of defective and sometimes even dangerous rubbish.
Based in Hastings, East Sussex, ’Steve’s Hi-fi’ is primarily a repair and renovation business and because of this we are able to ensure everything we sell operates correctly, is safe and is attractively presented.
Every unit that arrives here goes through a standard process:
1. The unit is thoroughly cleaned inside and out. This is especially important for amplifiers and receivers which can overheat if too much dirt gets into them.
2. After cleaning, the unit can be more easily examined for problems affecting electrical safety: damaged cables and wiring, incorrect internal fuses (very common), faulty insulation, evidence of unskilled tampering (also very common), cracked circuit boards -the unit may have been dropped- and so on.
3. Next the unit is powered up and tested for any operational faults. Any necessary repairs and servicing tasks are carried out and upon completion the unit is tested for earth current leakage.
4. Casework is quite often scratched and dented, and where this serious the unit is repaired and re-sprayed. Minor scratches are touched in.
5. Finally the unit is given an extensive bench test to ensure that nothing has been missed.
All of this makes us sound expensive, but check our prices and you will find that this is not so. In fact, we are no dearer than many of our competitors where almost certainly none of the above applies, and where you definitely won’t be offered any kind of warranty - let alone three months parts and labour!
